Zahira College Mawanella
A Mohamed NowsadIt gives me a great pleasure in meeting virtually the school community at large of Zahira College Mawanella. Dear children, parents, past students and the well-wishers! Zahira College Mawanellla is an educational icon in Sri Lanka. It is one of the leading state schools in Sri Lanka and the one and only fully fledged Tamil Medium national in the Sabargamuwa Province It can be known as an educational institution that struggle to implement the national curriculum in its full swing to a population of 3500 students who come elsewhere from the Island. Zahira College Mawanella, a school originally established by the grand mosque of the Hingulloya, was officially taken over by the State in May 1921. Since then it has played a vital role in transforming a traditional farming society into a modernized one, which contributes immensely to turn the national educational goals into achievements. In this way, about fifty principals and teachers from elsewhere in the island have worked for well over a century. Now it majestically stands in the middle of the village Hingulloya, giving light to a great many people. The thatched building with the grand mosque built some hundred years ago has now evolved into a college that is in possession of multi storied buildings, playgrounds, labs, auditoriums, two big sections, and so on. It now touches Marawa with playground, Owatta with the primary section and Beligamman with the upper school, just like a university. The parents and past students have done, and are doing a lot to make this school take this shape, especially in pooling the physical resources, while the teachers have burnt their blood to make this school what is it today. We are at the turn of a new century. The journey is not over yet though. In a sense it is a beginning towards turning a school into college – a college that is on top the list that ranks the Sri Lankan schools. Learning/teaching process needs a great deal of modernization – like digitalizing the whole school system; providing such facilities as swimming pool, gym and indoor stadium; renovating the old buildings or pulling down them and making rooms for new ones; and developing the capacity of the staff, especially the academic staff to make the children face the future with great confidence Thus, 2021 is just a mile stone the school has just gone past. It shows us the signal to step on the second lap towards a new world, a new school order at Hingulloya. Such new orders call for the cooperation of the school community at large. Let me open my arms to invite all those who would like to contribute to make Zahira a light.
